“I have seen the first season and I really dug it,” he says of the show. “The palpable kitchen anxiety, even though it’s a bit dramatized, it’s really damn close,” to how things are at a real-life restaurant. It sounds like the last few months of his life have been a bit like the streaming show, “The Bear,” whose title character runs a Chicago restaurant (and deals with all the drama that goes along with that). Sickels says he hasn’t had time to watch season two yet, where they (spoiler alert!) attempt to open their new restaurant — because he’s been actually living it.

Since founding the site in 2015, we have explored over 1,300 attractions, restaurants, bars/breweries, events, cool public spaces, and so many more things to do in Pittsburgh. Thankfully, to fill the gap Kingfly Spirits and Arboretum Trail Brewing were hosting in-house popups featuring their cocktails (on separate billing) to serve up the drinks along with the food. The beef tartare was another small plate that had Asian inspired elements as the beef was topped with a soy cured egg yolk, shoyu (soy sauce), miso, and more. While the meet was the star of the show here, the light soy and miso flavors were present and added a nice umami richness with subtle sweetness overall. The only organization to support all six ballot initiatives. Allowed to die; John Ashcroft was the governor of Missouri at that time.

The charred (shou sugi ban) upper volume floats above and contrasts with the snow below. The concrete walls bolster the house against snow loads while providing a protective shell against the elements, analogous to the hull of a ship. The porous lakeside façade is composed of sliding glass doors providing views and a direct connection to the lake. 1) It might have become another Rockaway Pizzeria, the well-attended joint in White Oak owned by Josh Sickels, but the kitchen was not large enough. So Hemlock House, formerly The Map Room, will feature what the menu calls “irreverent food and cocktails.” Small plates include Crab & Bacon Hushpuppies, Mushroom Toast, and Beef Tartare.

Sandpoint's Hemlock House provides all the amenities at a great price. Enjoy the chance to meet new people and make lifelong friends. The result is a composition of charred wood walls over a concrete base.

The interior prioritizes light and connection to the landscape. The palette of bleached hemlock and white walls reflect sunlight throughout the interior and down to the lower level via the stair. The primary living and dining functions reside on the second floor to capture views of the lake.

The bunk room sleeps 4-8 with full-size bunks and is equipped with powered cubbies to facilitate remote work and play. The media room adjacent to the bunk room serves as an overflow space for additional guests. Hiking and Biking enthusiasts will enjoy St. Germain’s Bike & Hike Trail, a 12.5-mile loop that runs through the towns of St. Germain and Eagle River. The trail offers a variety of terrain suitable for all levels and the trailhead is easily accessible from the cabin.

“Snacks” feature a Kielbasa Corn Dog, Shishitos (those mild Japanese, charred peppers,) and Fried Smelts. Of course there are special burgers and chicken sandwiches, and large plates featuring Ribeye, Pork Tenderloin and a Gouda-based Mac ’N’ Cheese. For the “V” crowd, Hemlock House offers up a wild mushroom Farrotto, Fried Artichokes and a decadent Kale Salad, among other intriguing fare. Little Saint Germain is one of the most popular fishing and recreational lakes in the Northwoods with over 950 acres to explore.

Pittsburgh’s Hemlock House is Serving up a Punk Rock Fine Dining Experience

For now, in lieu of the license, Hemlock House is partnering with local beer and liquor places for extended pop-ups inside the establishment. The menu varies weekly, but a recent list included a lemon-caper tofu dish, an eggplant agrodolce sandwich, and an orecchiette and mushroom soup. There, you just got healthier reading that description (no not really). Eventually, Hemlock House will also serve cocktails, once their liquor license has been finalized, likely later next month. Until then, they’ve partnered with Kingfly Spirits in the Strip District and Arboretum Trail Brewing in the East End, “for extended pop-ups with their products, basically,” he says. The home is situated at Lake Naomi, a private community and retreat comprised of a lake, community center, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts and golf club.

For those who love interesting flavors with perfectly cooked pasta, this one is a gem. The foie gras nigiri was an interesting one for a limited run menu item and was all about the texture- delectably smooth foie gras served on top of rice was the picture of decadence all around.

The bulk of construction took place during the pandemic. The owner and architect were in a “pod, driving long hours together for site visits. This togetherness presented a unique opportunity for conversation, collaboration, and ultimately a common vision for their family. Decorated with a flare of cows, this cabin is warm and cozy. This one takes a classic bucatini and incorporates uni and sake into a cream sauce before being topped with stracciatella and roe for a tangy, sweet, and salty splash of flavor that was rather unexpected.

May Day Marching Band parades music and a mission on Pittsburgh streets

The Beechview pizzeria that just celebrated 13 years in business has opened its sixth area location in Robinson Town Centre. The latest creation of musician and restaurateur Joshua Sickels, founder of Rockaway Pizzeria in White Oak, Hemlock House has “no similarities to the pizzeria other than possibly aesthetics,” Sickels tells NEXTpittsburgh. We are a close-knit community and hold our neighbors and local businesses in high regard. Two-night minimum – We require a two-night minimum and in the summer months we ask that you avoid checking out on Saturdays as it is our turnover day at Hemlock Hall, and we are very busy.

Find More to Do East of Pittsburgh

This unit has been recently remodeled with an all new kitchen, new bathroom, new flooring, and all new furniture. Initially, Sickels planned to move his pizza shop from White Oak into the former Map Room space. But after checking out the kitchen, he realized it was much too small for what he needed to make his pizza. Thus, the idea for something completely distinctive was born. On July 11, an open sign quietly clicked on in Regent Square. With the lights illuminated, Rockaway Pizzeria owner Joshua Sickels’s second restaurant, Hemlock House, officially debuted.

Kayaks and life jackets have been provided to help you get right out on the water – paddling the lake is the best way to see eagles soaring above. The kitchen has all the bells and whistles needed to cook a gourmet meal or entertain guests. You can enjoy the water view from the floor to ceiling windows in the living room, fieldstone gas FP & lakeside primary bedroom ft. large ensuite.

The kitchen has been perfectly appointed to offer all of the necessities of your home kitchen. Cozy up around the gas fireplace after a long day or with your morning coffee before heading out.The kitchen comes fully equipped with appliances (including a dishwasher!) and everything needed for cooking and eating. Cook meals in the kitchen or fire up the charcoal grill.

Getaway Cabin is located on a quiet road within walking distance of town! With 1 king, 2 queens, and a sleeper sofa, the cabin comfortably sleeps 8. The open-concept kitchen, dining, and living areas all overlook the amazing shoreline of the lovely and desirable Lost Lake. On the snacks and small plates front, we started with an order of crab and bacon hushpuppies, beef tartare, and foie gras nigiri which was a limited special during our visit. Hemlock House is located in the former Map Room space in Regent Square, and originally Sickels was thinking of moving the pizzeria to that location.

CRYSTAL ICE HOUSE

In recent years, as the area has experienced warmer winters, Crystal Ice Cave seems to be melting, according to a short video from the National Parks Service. The Parks Service did not open Crystal Ice Cave tours in 2020 due to  high temperatures, which prevent the monumental ice formations from freezing and leave areas of the cave wet and too dangerous to traverse. The cave is usually accessible via private tours on Saturdays from January through March, which can only be booked over the phone and tend to fill up fast, according to Gizmodo. At one point, the ice cave tours took as many as 40 people—until rangers noticed the tours caused an enormous, unnatural spike in temperature and reduced the group size to six.

Departing from the parking lot along Icehouse Canyon Road, the trail takes course along the northern bank of a creek that flows down the canyon. Crystal clear water tumbles past oaks and sycamores, and this is a fine venue for a directionless romp through nature for those disinterested in following the trail. A half-dozen cabins are spread out along the bottom of the canyon, along with another half-dozen stone foundations (ruins left over from the early days of the Angeles).

Each free skate level is comprised of a variety of progressive skating skills, transitions, spins and jumps — all of which build on the previous skill, providing skaters a strong foundation of all elements. These levels will be taught in a positive and interactive group format such as a bridge program, circuit classes or as an introductory training program. In 1870, a group of 372 Modocs left the reservation and returned to Lava Beds, taking refuge in a natural lava fortress and holding off the U.S. army for five months.

Trans activist Rose Montoya apologizes, defends flash stunt at White House

topless at white house

"It was unfair to the hundreds of attendees who were there to celebrate their families," she continued. "So, you know, we're going to continue to be clear on that. … It's not appropriate. It's disrespectful. And let's not -- it really does not reflect the event that we hosted to celebrate the LGBTQ+ families." The spokeswoman said Montoya and the two other topless guests in her video would not be invited to future White House events. Among the attendees was Montoya, a transgender rights activist who rose to prominence in 2021 for her educational social-media content about trans issues. On social media, Montoya, whose Instagram biography identifies her as an educator, model and actor, called the video an act of joy in celebrating the transgender community. “Individuals in the video certainly will not be invited to future events,” the press secretary said.

White House Bars Topless Transgender Influencer From Events

"These are the 'bravest and most inspiring' people Biden has ever known. The country you once knew is gone." "This is what happened on the White House lawn," tweeted Collin Rugg, co-owner of conservative commentary outlet Trending Politics. Prominent military veterans have accused the Biden administration of diminishing the American flag by placing a Pride banner at the center of a display. To be considered public nudity, one must expose the female breast below the top of the nipple without full “opaque coverage,” according to the law on obscenity in the District of Columbia. Also in the clips, the Idaho-born model was seen getting the opportunity to meet the president and first lady.

Transgender Activist Rose Montoya Apologizes For Going Topless At White House

"And because it is perfectly within the law in Washington D.C., I decided to join them and cover my nipples just to play it safe." "My transmasculine friends are showing off their top surgery scars and living in joy, and I wanted to join them," Montoya added. "And because it is perfectly within the law in Washington, D.C., I decided to join them and cover my nipples just to play it safe." On Saturday Rose Montoya attended a Pride event on the White House lawn, hosted by the Biden administration, along with hundreds of other queer activists.

Biden Mocks Fox During White House Correspondents' Dinner

Montoya stood grinning in front of the White House in one part of the video, the top of her dress at her waist, her hands covering her nipples. “When families across the country face excruciating decisions to relocate to a different state to protect their child from dangerous anti-LGTBQ laws, we have to act. We need to push back against the hundreds of callous and cynical bills introduced in states targeting transgender children, terrifying families and criminalising doctors and nurses,” he said.

Another user told Montoya that while they support her and everything that she stands for, "Exposing your breasts at this event did not help the cause." "It has recently come to my attention that conservatives are trying to use the video of me topless at the White House to try to call the community groomers etc.," Montoya said in the video. Rose Montoya was among hundreds welcomed by President Joe Biden on Saturday for a celebration on the South Lawn described by the administration as the largest Pride event ever hosted at the White House. "I am committed to using this moment as a catalyst for creating positive change both within myself and within the broader community and the world at large," she said.

"More so than ever before, I have learned how powerful and just how impactful my actions are and how impactful it is when we share our stories and experiences and how we do so with the world. I want to take this moment to apologize for the impact of my actions." Rose Montoya, a transgender model and activist who posted the video to TikTok in which she and other guests posed topless, responded Friday in a 3-minute video posted to her social media platforms. "This behaviour is inappropriate and disrespectful for any event at the White House. It is not reflective of the event we hosted to celebrate LGBTQI+ families or the other hundreds of guests who were in attendance," Ms Jean-Pierre said. "In a quick moment of fleeting and overwhelming trans joy, I decided to do something unbecoming of a guest of the president at the White House lawn celebration," Montoya said.

In a short video shared to her Instagram page, Ms Montoya can be seen shaking Mr Biden’s hand and telling him “trans rights are human rights”. The White House announced a woman who took her top off during an event on the South Lawn over the weekend would not be invited to future events. The Biden administration said transgender activist Rose Montoya will not be invited back to the White House following her decision to go topless during the Pride Month event on the South Lawn. Three guests at a White House LGBTQ+ Pride party on Saturday have been banned from future events after posing topless on the South Lawn.

Despite being similar in age, Biden said, the two presidential hopefuls have little else in common. Former Trump Vice President Mike Pence has refused to endorse Trump’s reelection bid. The “Saturday Night Live” comedian honored his grandfather William Kelly, a longtime firefighter on Staten Island who painted houses and worked as a substitute teacher.

“No, this isn’t another hookers-n-blow photo from Hunter’s laptop, it was the Pride party on the White House lawn two days ago hosted by Joe,” radio host Dana Loesch tweeted. “Since the Israel-Gaza war began, journalists have been paying the highest price — their lives — to defend our right to the truth. Each time a journalist dies or is injured, we lose a fragment of that truth,” CPJ Program Director Carlos Martínez de la Serna said in a statement. More than two dozen journalists in Gaza wrote a letter last week calling on their colleagues in Washington to boycott the dinner altogether.

The video sparked an online backlash, with many claiming her actions were in bad taste. Rose Montoya, 27, met the US president and First Lady Jill Biden at the largest Pride celebration in White House history on Saturday. Montoya, 27, who goes by pronouns she/they, was among hundreds of people the Biden administration invited to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue to celebrate Pride Month which is observed each June. In response, Ms Montoya said being topless in Washington was legal and she had no intention of being vulgar.

Although it immediately raised the hackles of conservatives, Montoya justified the post by saying she wanted to join two transmasculine friends who were showing off their own top surgery scars. “It has recently come to my attention that conservatives are trying to use the video of me topless at the White House to try to call the community groomers, et cetera. And I would just like to say that first of all, going topless in Washington, D.C. Is legal, and I fully support the movement in freeing the nipple,” she said. Also on Tuesday, The Guardian published an interview with Montoya discussing the lack of paid partnerships during this year’s Pride month.

The individuals in the video won't be invited to future events, Jean-Pierre said. "Trans rights are human rights," Montoya said in the clip while shaking Biden's hand. Near the end of the video, Montoya was shown walking toward the White House and going topless on the South Lawn as her hands covered her breasts.

In 2011, he sat in the audience, and glowered through a roasting by then-President Barack Obama of Trump’s reality-television celebrity status. Obama’s sarcasm then was so scalding that many political watchers linked it to Trump’s subsequent decision to run for president in 2016. “We have to take this serious — eight years ago we could have written it off as ‘Trump talk’ but not after January 6,” Biden told the audience, referring to the supporters of Trump who stormed the Capitol after Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 election. But the president quickly segued to a grim speech about what he believes is at stake this election, saying that another Trump administration would be even more harmful to America than his first term.

No Presidential Immunity for Personal Crimes Dressed in 'Official' Clothing

Montoya first responded to criticism to the toplessness in a separate TikTok post before the White House's statements. "Are we topless at the White House?" someone can be heard saying in the video. However, looking at Montoya's TikTok video post shows that replies and comments there are largely supportive and positive. The Bidens hosted a Pride Month 2023 event at the White House over the weekend, complete with Pride Flags and banners.

"My trans masculine friends were showing off their top surgery scars and living in joy, and I wanted to join them," she said. "And because it is perfectly within the law of Washington DC, I decided to join them and cover my nipples just to play it safe." Transgender model and activist Rose Montoya has apologized for going topless at a White House Pride event and posting the video, after a week of criticism from right-wing outlets, trans advocates and the White House press secretary. On Saturday afternoon, President Joe Biden welcomed hundreds of guests to a picnic on the South Lawn.

While Montoya's actions have seen her barred from attending future events at the White House, at least under Biden's administration, her follower count has seen a surge in the days since the event. Transgender activist Rose Montoya, who has been barred from the White House after going topless during a Pride Month event on the South Lawn, has seen her popularity on social media grow. A transgender model who flashed her breasts at the White House has been branded “disrespectful” by the Joe Biden administration. Asked about Montoya's behavior, a White House spokesperson told Newsweek in a statement it was "inappropriate and disrespectful for any event at the White House." It was a brief shot where Montoya is seen topless with her hands covering her breasts alongside two others that prompted an edited version of her video to be circulated on Twitter by conservatives.

"It’s my sincere intention to actively promote empathy, equity, inclusion and understanding through my words and my actions and my advocacy efforts." So far this year, more than 490 anti-LGBTQ bills have been filed in state legislatures across the country — a historic first — according to the American Civil Liberties Union. Many of those bills would limit transition-related health care for trans minors and restrict trans athletes from competing on sports teams that align with their gender identities. Montoya shared the racy footage Monday to Instagram along with a spliced-together video of the event, where the president and first lady Jill Biden delivered speeches to the hundreds of invitees in attendance. According to a preliminary investigation released Friday by the Committee to Protect Journalists, nearly 100 journalists have been killed covering the war in Gaza. One organizer complained that the White House Correspondents’ Association — which represents the hundreds of journalists who cover the president — largely has been silent since the first weeks of the war about the killings of Palestinian journalists.

"It took focus from what this event was meant to be and focused it right on to you," the user wrote. "I'm sorry to say this to you as I do really support you and admire you. As part of the LGBTQI+ community, I am saddened that this only added fuel for the Conservatives to spread the lies that we are nothing more than sexual deviants." "[Y]our feckless topless stunt has set us back further! Those of us who have been clawing and fighting for equality will not forgive you," one Instagram user commented under the video. Montoya's minute-long video included shots of Biden delivering remarks, her meeting the president and first lady Jill Biden as well as posing with other attendees. Some used the debacle to launch broader criticism of the trans community at large, lacing it with transphobic slurs.

Officials there didn’t immediately respond to a question about nudity rules on the grounds. A native Idahoan, Montoya spoke about trans people’s experiences at a National Press Club panel in D.C. "In a quick moment of fleeting and overwhelming trans joy, I decided to do something unbecoming of a guest of the president." The White House banned trans influencer Rose Montoya from future events after she posted a video ... [+] showing her briefly going topless during a Pride event at the White House. A transgender TikTok influencer and trans rights activist filmed herself and others flashing their chests on the White House's lawn at a Pride Event over the weekend, and her video caused a bit of a stir online. A White House spokesman later said that Ms Montoya had been “inappropriate and disrespectful” and would not be invited to future events. "I had the honor of attending White House Pride, the largest one in history where the pride flag flew for the first time," Montoya wrote in the caption of her TikTok video.

Your neighbors at the bar are a mixed bag, ranging from run-of-the-mill barflies, couples (straight and LGBTQ) and a growing number of hip twentysomethings. A dance will run you $20 and there’s not much in the way of privacy, but sometimes the spirit takes you and – if that dancer is good enough – you’ll forget everyone else exists. She shared the clips with her social media followers and later slapped back at critics by claiming she did not violate any Washington, DC, laws. Trans rights are human rights,” Montoya said to the Democrat as they shook hands. The polyamorous model and trans rights advocate, who grew up in rural Idaho, did not immediately respond to an interview request.

Montoya, 27, was barred from the executive mansion on Tuesday, as footage went viral of her pulling her shirt and cupping her breasts moments after meeting Biden on the South Lawn at a Pride party Saturday. Montoya was among hundreds of people the Biden administration invited to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue to celebrate Pride Month which is observed each June. In 2021 she was named one of “18 LGBTQ+ Policy Makers and Advocates Changing the World” by Out Magazine on the strength of her online “educational content” as Republican-led state legislatures around the nation enacted anti-trans legislation. She began performing in drag during college and came out as transgender in 2015, when she started “gender affirming hormone therapy” and changed her name legally to Rosalynne, the bio says. The incident was posted to her 103,000 followers on Instagram, along with a follow-up clip Monday night, in which the 27-year-old snapped back at detractors.

At the event, Mr Biden made a speech calling for the protection of the rights and safety of LGBT people amid a spate of “terrifying” attacks on the community. During the event Saturday, dubbed the largest Pride event in White House history, President Joe Biden lambasted "dangerous anti-LGBTQ" laws passed in state legislatures around the country. He singled out a Florida law that bans the teaching of gender identity and sexual orientation in public schools. Montoya defended her behavior in a follow-up video, arguing that going topless in Washington, D.C., is legal and accusing conservatives of using the video to try to advance their agenda.

"This behavior is inappropriate and disrespectful for any event at the White House," a White House spokesperson told Newsweek on Tuesday in response to the video. "It is not reflective of the event we hosted to celebrate LGBTQI+ families or the other hundreds of guests who were in attendance. Individuals in the video will not be invited to future events." The spokesperson said that her actions were "not reflective of the event we hosted to celebrate LGBTQI+ families or the other hundreds of guests who were in attendance" and that "individuals in the video will not be invited to future events." The White House announced Wednesday that the transgender activist would no longer be invited to future events for taking her top off at the celebration on the South Lawn over the weekend.

The stakes are high this year, and our 2024 coverage could use continued support. If circumstances have changed since you last contributed, we hope you’ll consider contributing to HuffPost once more. In addition, Montoya said she wanted “to apologize to my family and friends who have been harassed” and her own community.

Here, see all the stars arriving on the red carpet at the 2024 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. “Thanks for setting back everything the trans community has been trying to accomplish,” one trans follower wrote. Montoya — who boasts 110,000 followers on Instagram — originally went viral during the COVD-19 pandemic when she posted about the discomfort of going through airport security. Following the initial backlash to the topless clip, Montoya protested that her actions were completely legal. All people should be expected to have a level of respect and decorum if you’re a guest at the White House. It’s not a big ask to expect people to keep their clothes on.I’m saddened for everyone and what image this sends domestically and to our enemies.

"Hammer House of Horror" The Silent Scream TV Episode 1980

hammer house of horror

William's ghost and the plant then disappear and Laurie finds James lying on William's grave. They look at the gravestone, which now says Terence Morton and his beloved son William. The plant that was Terence's work is now growing on the grave in the shape of a wreath, which Laurie says is "for all the unloved of this earth", as she walks away with James. Episodes were directed by Alan Gibson, Peter Sasdy and Tom Clegg, among others, and the story editor was Anthony Read. Hammer regular Peter Cushing appears in his final Hammer production in episode 7, titled "The Silent Scream". Hammer House of Horror is a British horror anthology television series produced in Britain in 1980.

The Evil of Frankenstein

Lee appears as the doctor who sides with Penny's stepmother and attempts to convince the young woman that she never saw her father's corpse. Has there ever been a more tantalizing-sounding sub-genre than "martial arts horror"? Cushing's Dr. Van Helsing is recruited to fight the seven vampires of the title, who have menaced a remote Chinese village for generations, in this Hammer and Shaw brothers co-production, filmed in 1973 at the Shaw Brothers Studio in Hong Kong. Here we have a case of an amazing episode title attached to a subpar episode that never seems to rise to the potential of its premise. The story follows a mortuary worker who finds that the number nine seems to be recurring in his daily existence so often that it suggests a dark pattern. His growing obsession with the number soon points toward a dark conspiracy, and while Peter McEnery does a convincing job in the lead role, the actual horror of it all comes too little too late.

Hammer Film Productions

There are moments of The Devil Rides Out, select passages and images, that still strike one as being quintessentially "horrific," the sort of unspeakable, distorted images that linger from your nightmares. Hammer stalwart Fisher's direction seems to pre-empt Italian horror baron Dario Argento with his use of lighting and camera movement, which coupled with the quintessentially late-'50s color palette makes the film absolutely leap off the screen. Val Guest, director of The Quatermass Xperiment, reteamed with that film's original scribe, Nigel Kneale, for this top-notch yeti thriller. A team of explorers — led by Dr. John Rollason (Cushing) and his wife Helen (Maureen Connell) — on an expedition to the Himalayas with members of a local monastery collide with a second team of explorers who are searching for the abominable snowman. As an infant, Jack the Ripper's daughter Anna (Angharad Rees) witnesses her father stab her mother to death. Now a young adult experiencing troubling blackouts, after which freshly eviscerated bodies always seem to be present, Anna the Ripper decides to take up with a psychiatrist (Eric Porter) who attempts to cure her of her murderous affliction.

Also in 1951, Hammer and Exclusive signed a four-year production and distribution contract with Robert Lippert, an American film producer. It was for The Last Page that Hammer made a significant appointment when they hired film director Terence Fisher, who played a critical role in the forthcoming horror cycle. In many ways, Horror of Dracula (or simply Dracula abroad) is the film that made Hammer's name. It certainly buttered the studio's bread for many years to come, along with Cushing's Frankenstein series.

Episodes

She advises going to police but Harry refuses as his rifle was unlicensed and Penny may "land back in the asylum". He buries Charlie in the woods and disposes of Charlie's Range Rover into the lake nearby, and they remove all evidence of the incident. The local policeman arrives, saying that Charlie has been missing for two days, and is questioning Harry because of a disagreement the two of them had in a pub. Chuck Spillers (Brian Cox), after serving two years for burglary, is released from prison with the help of an elderly pet shop owner Martin Blueck (Peter Cushing), who also gives him money and offers him a job in his shop. To save Sarah and himself, the remaining two people in the photograph, Graham goes to Heinz Hoffman (Marius Goring), his uncle's art dealer, who first told them about Charlie Boy at the mansion.

Box office, but Hammer was unable to capitalise on them as most of the profits went to other financial backers. Towards the end of 1951, the one-year lease on Down Place expired, and with its growing success Hammer looked towards more conventional studio-based productions. A dispute with the Association of Cinematograph Technicians blocked this proposal, and the company purchased the freehold of Down Place instead.

Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense

In America, eight episodes from the series were broadcast as four made-for-television films consisting of twinned episodes along with new segment introduction footage provided by actors Patrick McGoohan, Sebastian Cabot and Joan Crawford serving as hosts. The series was first aired on ABC from 26 September, 1968 to 30 January, 1969, prior to broadcast in the UK on ITV in 1969. Hammer's horror films featured many actors who appeared repeatedly in a number of movies, forming an informal "Hammer repertory company". Terence Fisher's version of Gaston Leroux's novel (with a screenplay by John Elder) was not received well critically or financially at the time of its release.

Creepy kids are very often a winning formula in horror, and they work well in at least one other Hammer House of Horror episode, as we’ll soon see. “Growing Pains,” though, is a case of both too much going on in a single episode, and not enough simple horror pleasure to be found in the core concept. The episode follows a married couple who adopt a young boy after the death of their son, and the boy’s detached and peculiar demeanor soon leads to strange happenings around the house. Even the obtuse theme music, which starts with a stab of dramatic drums before going into an unexpectedly major-key guitar line that sounds like a Wall’s Viennetta advertisement, adds to the show’s out-of-tune style. That kind of says it all – none of it’s quite right.” He points to his favourite episode, The Two Faces of Evil, to illustrate. A family are involved in a car crash that leaves the father disfigured, with bandages covering his face.

There was something in the water in the filmmaking community at this time that has been elusive ever since, where even the nastiest material could be directed with a flourish that would send it down smoothly. Brenda (Rita Tushingham), an author of children's books living at home with her mother, decides to venture out to London and find a father for the child she is not yet pregnant with, but is determined to have. She meets Peter (Shane Briant), a sociopath preying on the city's women who lures Brenda into his bloody game of deceit. Penny Appleby (Susan Strasberg) returns to her father's home on the French Riviera, only to find her stepmother (Ann Todd) making excuses for his absence. After Penny spots her father's dead body, only for it to vanish later, she enlists the help of the family's driver (Ronald Lewis) to help her crack the case.

It is revealed that everything was a ploy, and the entire sequence of events were staged to deceive everyone into believing the house was haunted and they were forced to flee. Powers sells the film rights to his bestselling book, based on these 'paranormal' experiences, making himself, William and Emma even richer. However, Sophia (who was never told of the scam) has become quiet and detached and Emma worries she may have been affected by the traumatic events in the house. When Sophia reads Powers' book and then discovers the belongings of the old couple who lived in the house before them, she seemingly becomes possessed. Picking up the kukri, the murder weapon from the old house, she walks into her mother's bedroom and kills William as Emma screams in horror.

You can probably see where this whole thing is going right up to the final ironic twist. That doesn’t mean it’s not entertaining, but it also means the entertainment only takes you so far. Three years later in California, William and Emma (who is revealed to actually be a single parent) are rich and living together, with Sophia who is now older.

hammer house of horror

Several Hammer House of Horror episodes follow the “person is driven mad by events they can’t explain or control” formula, but “Visitor from the Grave” is by far the most unpleasant. Created by Roy Skeggs after years of false starts for Hammer on the television front, Hammer House of Horror was devised as a way to tell contemporary stories with a classic Hammer feel. Edwyn lives with his cranky-natured mother (Annie Dyson), with a pretty estranged tenant lady Stella (Georgina Hale) and her baby as their neighbour. He visits a rector, Father Macintosh (Antony Brown), for advice, but runs away when he sees 9 mentioned as the date of service.

Grace Marshall (Riley Keough) moves with her stepchildren-to-be, Aiden (Jaeden Martell) and Mia (Lia McHugh), into an isolated cabin just before the Christmas holidays, to await the arrival of her fiancée. It's to be anything but a holly-jolly Christmas, however, as Grace and the kids begin experiencing bizarre events that seem to harken back to Grace's past as the sole survivor of a mass suicide initiated by the cult to which she belonged. Drifter Jeff Farrell (Kerwin Mathews) stumbles into a bar in southern France, where he immediately becomes enraptured with the owner's stepdaughter, Annette (Liliane Brousse). Annette's stepmother, Nadia (Eve Baynat), begins to seduce Jeff as well, in the hopes that he will assist her in springing her estranged husband, Annette's father, from the prison in which he is incarcerated after blow-torching the face of a man who attacked his young daughter. This energetic and colorful reimagining of the Hitchcock classic finds Shepherd in the prime of her comedic powers, playing splendidly off of Gould as her foil. Much like William Castle's 1963 version of The Old Dark House, this take on the story is more blatantly positioning itself as a farce.

While awaiting execution for murder, Baron Victor Frankenstein tells the story of a creature he built and brought to life - only for it to behave not as he intended. If we saw the logo of Hammer, we knew it was going to be a very special picture. After a few quiet years, the film The Lodge had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on 25 January 2019.

Indeed, behind-the-scenes problems led to significant alterations to the overall film. Originally, Cary Grant had reached out to Hammer about starring in one of their upcoming films. Grant had been so impressed by Fisher's work on The Curse of Frankenstein and Horror of Dracula that he wished to work specifically with the director, and so Hammer went about crafting a script. The result of this was a draft of Phantom in which each role was written to potentially appeal to Grant himself, who ended up not taking any of the parts after his agent talked him out of doing a low-budget horror flick. Hammer then had a script on its hands of such cost that the only way to make a profit was to release the film with an A rating, which would allow children of all ages as long as anyone under 12 were accompanied by an adult. Almost immediately, bits and pieces of Guest's film were regurgitated into American films, to say nothing of the countless British knock-offs.

In 2010, Hammer revitalized itself as a new name in the horror game and released Matt Reeves' acclaimed Let Me In, soon followed by the Daniel Radcliffe-led remake of The Woman in Black. Hammer's most recent release was Doctor Jekyll, featuring Eddie Izzard as Dr. Nina Jekyll (and her alter ego, Rachel Hyde) in a modern retelling of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson story, which premiered at London's FrightFest in August 2023. With any luck, Hammer will continue its reign of terror for decades to come. This site is my homage to the series where you will find information on each episode, plus filming locations and other items of interest related to the filming of the series.

London, Fleet Street

With a cast including Diana Dors, Peter Cushing and even the future James Bond Pierce Brosnan, the horrors played out in a world of everyday people, provincial English towns, smoking in pubs, creaky village antique shops, regional accents and full-English breakfasts. This was not even the climax of The House That Bled to Death, part of British horror studio Hammer’s TV venture, Hammer House of Horror. That would come when the truth about the birthday girl’s duplicitous parents was revealed – and, indeed, they got their reward. But it was this bloody scene that would become, for many, the defining memory of one of the creepiest programmes ever shown on British television. Forty years ago this month, ITV broadcast a children’s birthday party that no one in attendance would forget. As a group of kids gathered on screen for jelly and games, a torrent of brilliant red Kensington gore suddenly came from above, soaking everything and everyone in the room.

When Miss Froy disappears, and no one but Amanda has any recollection of her, the heiress enlists a photographer (Elliott Gould) to back her up in uncovering the truth behind the missing woman. Perhaps the most famous episode in Hammer House of Horror, thanks to its delightfully over-the-top centerpiece scene, is also one of its very best. “The House That Bled to Death” follows the classic “family buys a house with a dark past because it’s cheap” formula, then twists it in wonderfully ironic ways that fit the darkly comic aesthetic of some of the best Hammer stories.

Tom goes back to their car to collect some things, but is attacked by a half-human creature covered in fur with yellow eyes. When he returns to the house, he and Sarah hear howling coming from the woods. Later that night in their room, Sarah is horrified when she sees the face of a werewolf at the window. Finding their bedroom door locked, Tom climbs out of the window to investigate, but falls while climbing the drainpipe. Meanwhile, the werewolf enters their bedroom through the house and attacks Sarah as Mrs Ardoy and the children watch in delight. In the latter part of the 1970s, Hammer made fewer films, and attempts were made to break away from the then-unfashionable Gothic horror films on which the studio had built its reputation.

Janet wakes up in hospital unharmed with her son, and is told that Martin underwent emergency neck surgery and cannot talk for the time being. The local policeman questions Janet, who says she can't remember anything after the crash, but that the attacker had long nails on his right hand. She is then told that the attacker was killed in the crash and his right hand is missing, hence the nails can't be seen for identification. After Penny's body is taken away by the medics, Gupta takes off his disguise, Charlie reappears in person, and they begin celebrating their "success" with Harry and Margaret.

William and Emma Peters (Nicholas Ball and Rachel Davies) move into a house with their young daughter Sophia, but are apparently unaware of its history. Powers (Milton Johns), but the house was the site of a gruesome murder in the 1950s when an elderly man poisoned and hacked his wife to death. Soon, strange happenings begin, with creepy noises, doors that shut and do not open, leaking gas pipes, the appearance of bloodstains on walls, and even the slaughter of Sophia's pet cat by an unknown force.

A mother of three children under four years old was met with a “terrifying” surprise after she and her husband investigated why a handful of bees had flown into the attic of the couple’s North Carolina home. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee appeared in none of the Mummy sequels, which had stories and characters unrelated to the 1959 film and all three were relegated to second feature status, as by the mid-1960s, Hammer's films were often intended for double features. Often two films would be shot back-to-back with the same sets and costumes to save money, and then each film would be shown on a separate double feature to prevent audiences noticing any recycling, as for example in The Plague of the Zombies and The Reptile (both 1966). The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb supported the slightly more prestigious The Gorgon, whilst The Mummy's Shroud was a second feature for Frankenstein Created Woman. "Because of the fantastic business done world-wide by Hammer's Technicolor version of Dracula, Universal-International, its distributors, have made over to Jimmy Carreras' organisation, the remake rights to their entire library of classic films." The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas is not available to watch or rent.

The Mummy is an exceedingly elegant and creepy horror picture that seamlessly blends its action and adventure elements. Hammer's final release during its peak period was this Anthony Page-directed, made-for-television remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1938 film. Cybill Shepherd stars as Amanda, an American heiress on a cross-country train trip in pre-war Nazi Germany, who befriends a kind older woman, Miss Froy (Angela Lansbury), during the journey.

He investigates, and discovers a web of sex, incest, and Satanic possession. The film was an enormous success, not only in Great Britain, but also in the U.S., where it inspired numerous imitations from, amongst others, Roger Corman and American International Pictures (with their series largely based on Edgar Allan Poe – the so-called "Poe Cycle"). It found success on the European continent also, where Italian directors and audiences were particularly receptive. The project was handed to Tony Hinds, who was less impressed with the script than Michael Carreras, and whose vision for the film was a simple black-and-white 'quickie' made in three weeks. Concerned that Subotsky and Rosenberg's script had too many similarities to the Universal films, Hinds commissioned Jimmy Sangster to rewrite it as The Curse of Frankenstein. Sangster's treatment impressed Hammer enough to rescue the film from the 'quickie' treadmill and to produce it as a colour film.

She notices Chuck's coat at the store and immediately goes to the local police but they simply advise her to wait a while longer for his return before they act. Annie investigates the store at night and finds Chuck trapped in the cell, and runs to seek help. It is revealed that Martin is a former Nazi concentration camp official conducting bizarre experiments on human beings and animals, and wanted to use Chuck as a human subject. Shenley and Lolly go to another apartment to discuss another sale, where they find that the place is desolate and is being demolished, with them stuck in it. Shenley runs to safety outside, and is met with by Rayburn who repeats the same sentence. During the surgery, performed by Rayburn, Emily and Lolly, Shenley dies and is put in the mortuary—at which point he wakes up again beside his sleeping wife, after his fifth nightmare. Film music composer David Winter (Jon Finch) lives with his actress wife Mary (Prunella Gee) in a secluded farmhouse.

In the U.S., A&E Home Entertainment, under license from Carlton International Media Limited, released the complete series on Region 1 DVD in 2001.
